To Duel, click on the Sim you want them to battle and select 'Magic Duel' > 'Duel For Artifacts' in the Magic conversation category.

Lastly, your Sim has a chance of obtaining a Familiar when winning a Duel For Artifacts against another Sim. The Tome Shop in Caster's Alley also sells Familiars alongside Spells, though its stock rotates every day so there may not always be one for sale. To do this, click on any bookshelf in the building and then on 'Search For Tomes.' Note that you may not get a Familiar every time as Spells can also be discovered this way.
